Neil Erb

March 14, 1919 to December 26, 2010

FRANCESVILLE - Neil V. Erb, 91, of 6245 S 1400 W, Francesville, passed away at 10:15 p.m. (CST), Sunday, Dec. 26, in George Ade Memorial Health Care Center, Brook.

He was born March 14, 1919, in Francesville, the son of the late Herman and Bertha Honnegar Erb. His first marriage was to Ruth Long. In 1973 he married Marceline Sanders Burget. She preceeded him in death in March 2010.

Mr. Erb lived in Pulaski County most of his life. He grew up in White Post Township (across from where West Central Schools are now located) and attended school in Medaryville. He moved to Francesville in 1935, where he worked at the local milling company as a feed maker and truck driver. Later he worked as a filling station operator.

When the military draft began, he was 21 and signed up. He was called to serve in the armed forces in October 1941 and he spent most of the next 4-1/2 years in the service in the U.S and in the European Theater until World War II was over May 5, 1945. He recieved the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart medals.

In 1946, Mr. Erb began farming and worked for Manion Construction, building several houses and repairing quite a few. He took up the carpenter trade on his own along with farming until he retired in 1984. He built his present home south of Francesville in 1970. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Francesville. He was a Life Member of the American Legion, Jasper County 40&8 Voiture and Life Member of the VFW.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel-Francesville and one hour prior to services on Friday at the Church. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday (Dec. 31), at First Christian Church, Francesville, with Pastor James Ketchen officiating. Burial will be in Roseland Cemetery, Francesville. The American Legion will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial donations may be given to Francesville Christian Church, or the American Legion.

Merle H. Tiede

June 4, 1915 to December 17, 2010

MARTINSVILLE - Merle H. Tiede, 95, Greenfield, formerly of Indianapolis and Martinsville, died Friday, Dec. 17, at his residence.

He was born June 4, 1915, in Francesville, to the late William C. and Ruth Burson Tiede. He married Genevieve M. Guentert on Dec. 28, 1945. She preceded him in death on April 21, 2006.

Survivers include sons, Joel A. (Karen) Tiede of Greenfield, and Jeremy M. (Martha) Tiede of Appleton, Wis.; daughter, Marianne (Donald) Jaynes of Greenfield; sisters, Mary Falvo of Calumet City, Ill., and Shirley DeWees of Rensselaer; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Heather) and Nathan (Hope) Jaynes, Samuel, Annan, Tara, Rachel and Jason Tiede; and two great-grandchildren, Lyla and Luke Jaynes.

He was preceded in death son, Jon Christopher Tiede; sisters, Jean Schafer, Madge Dewees, Betty Barnhart and Marquriette "Sis" Bridges Hass; and brothers, Ronald, Donald, Robert, Claude, Fred, Billy and Lewis Tiede.

Mr. Tiede was employed as a deputy director for the Federal Housing Administraton for 30 years, and also worked for KMS Mortgage & Investment Company, both in Indianapolis. He was a U.S. Army veteran and member of the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Martinsville, and the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. on Monday (Dec. 20) at Neal & Summers Funeral & Cremation Center, Martinsville. Burial will follow at St. Martin Cemetery, Martinsville.

Margaret C. Lobdell

July 2, 1926 to December 18, 2010

NORTH JUDSON - Margaret C. Lobdell, 84, Winamac, died Saturday, Dec. 18 in Parkview Haven Nursing Home, Francesville.

She was born July 2, 1926, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Viola (German) Doyle. She married Dale Lobdell who preceded her in death.

Survivors include brothers, Ernest R. Doyle, Wesley Doyle, both of Millington, TN; sisters, Dorothy Wood of Virginia and Jewel Wood of Medaryville.

There will be no services or visitation. Braman & Bailey Funeral Home, North Judson, is handling arrangements.

Loretta E. Dunker

January 31, 1939 to December 23, 2010

WINAMAC - Loretta E. Dunker, 71,  of 1350 W. Main St., Berne, formerly of Medaryville, passed away at 10:32 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 23, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Jan. 31, 1939, in Medaryville, to the late William and Ella Dunker.

Henry (Virginia) Wagner, Winamac, Cousin

Ms. Dunker was born and raised in Medaryville. She lived and worked in Chicago, for many years. She resided in Berne for the past 10 years. She was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Medaryville.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday (Dec. 28), at St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery, Medaryville, with Pastor Tom Woodley officiating. 

Thomas C. Crawford

November 20, 1952 to December 14, 2010

ROCHESTER - Thomas C. Crawford, 58, 5845 S. SR 119, Star City, died at 11:45 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 14, at Life Care Center, Rochester.

He was born Nov. 20, 1952, in Pulaski County. His parents were Ernest and Gladys Crawford.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Penn Crawford of Harrison, Ark., two daughters, Alexis (Walter) Wesson of South Bend and Antonia Crawford of Mishawaka, a son, Jesse Crawford of Harrison, Ark., grandchildren, Daija Wesson, Devin Crawford, Walter Wesson Jr. and Gabriel Wesson, and a sister, Linda Weida of Winamac.

No services will be held. Memorial donations may be made to Hope Hospice of Fulton County. Arrangements were made by Zimmerman Bros. Family Funeral Home, Rochester.

 

Frances L. Smith

June 11, 1936 to December 22, 2010

WINAMAC - Frances L. Smith, 74, of 340 E. 18th St., Rochester, formerly of Star City, passed away at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Hickory Creek, Rochester.

She was born June 11, 1936, in Delong, the daughter of the late Helen R. Fry. She married E. Paul Smith on Nov. 13, 1981, in Star City. He died on Nov. 24, 1991.

Mrs. Smith lived in Star City for 10 years and moved to Rochester in June 2008. She also resided in Winamac for 10 years. She enjoyed finding golf balls in the area of Pond View Golf Course and was know affectionately as the Golf Ball Lady.

Friends may call after 1 p.m., Monday, at Frain Mortuary, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., (Monday, Dec. 27), at the funeral home, with Homer Hettinger officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Monterey.

Derrick Lee Mize

November 7, 2010 to December 9, 2010

GREENFIELD – Derrick Lee Mize, infant, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, at St. Vincent Women’s Hospital in Indianapolis. 

Born Nov. 7, 2010, he was the son of Stephen and Holly (Locke) Mize.

Surviving him are his parents, Steve and Holly Mize of Greenfield; grandparents, Mona and Tom Riddle of New Castle, Steve and Meg Mize of Greenfield, Jerry and Nancy Locke of Winamac, and Mary and Bill Henry of Royal Center; great-grandparents, Joan and Joe Reigel of Greenfield, Norman Mize of Indianapolis, Bill Locke of Winamac, Hank and Bev Henry of Royal Center, and Nettie Sanford of Greenfield; great-great-grandmother, Martha Mize of Greenfield; aunts and uncles, John Riddle of New Castle, Josh Riddle of New Castle, Seth Mize of Greenfield, Nicki and Shawn Gunter of Winamac; Josh and Danielle Henry of Wisconsin, and Jacob and Jeannine Henry of Lafayette; and cousins, Dominick Riddle and Bryce Gunter. Preceding him in death was his cousin, Zachery Riddle.

The funeral services will be at 6 p.m., Monday (Dec. 13), at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield with visitation two hours prior to the service. Burial will be Tuesday at Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
