Howard L. Miller

February 19, 1932 to November 7, 2021

WINAMAC - Howard Leslie “Les” Miller, 89, of West Lafayette, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, at Franciscan Health East Hospital in Lafayette.

He was born Feb. 19, 1932 in Star City to the Esther Ruth Corts and Howard David “Knute” Miller Jr. Following his graduation from Star City High School in 1950, he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On Aug. 19, 1967, he married Nancy Eileen Cain in Oaklandon, IN. She survives.

Mr. Miller was a self-taught man of many talents. In early 1960s, he was a professional umpire for the New York Yankees. He also spent several years farming as well as building and selling grain dryers. He took part in many successful endeavors throughout his life. He was innovative, creative, artistic, and tech-savvy. He completed his studies at Purdue University and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1969. He and his wife owned and operated a Charles Chips franchise and later in life, they ran Porky’s BBQ concessions. He was a former president of the National BBQ Association. He never really retired. He was an avid Chicago Cubs and Purdue University fan. He enjoyed watching old westerns and war movies. He especially enjoyed riding around on his scooter at the fairs with his dog Lilly. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. His legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 19, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 20, at the funeral home with Pastor Jim Cain officiating. Burial will be at Star City West Cemetery in Star City. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Memorial donations may be made to Star City West Cemetery or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Jennifer L. Kilgore Lawson

February 12, 1979 to November 6, 2021

WINAMAC - Jennifer L. Kilgore Lawson, 42, of Winamac, passed away at her sister’s home Saturday, Nov. 6, following a brave battle with cancer.

She was born Feb. 12, 1979 in Columbiana, AL to Timothy and Mariella Gawell Kilgore. From early on, she was a tomboy who loved being outdoors. She attended Winamac Community High School.

Ms. Lawson held many jobs locally where she served others with a smile. She enjoyed making jewelry, painting, story writing and spending time at the Tippecanoe River State Park. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her sons. She battled cancer for five years. On Oct. 23, 2021, she gave her life to the Lord and was baptized at home by Pastor Heath Hiatt. She fought the good fight and has finished her course; she is at home with Jesus.

In keeping with Jennifer’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. The family will gather for a celebration of her life at a later date.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frain Mortuary in Winamac.

 

Lorelie Hasek

January 30, 1950 to November 5, 2021

FRANCESVILLE - Lorelie Hasek, 71, of Francesville (formerly of Chicago), passed away Friday, Nov. 5, at home.

She was born Jan. 30, 1950 in Chicago to the late James and Sarah Dunn Burns. She attended Tuley High School in Chicago. On Dec. 23, 1966, she married William Joseph “Bill” Hasek, in Chicago. He passed away July 8, 2015.

Mrs. Hasek was a proud homemaker. She enjoyed camping and fishing in Canada with her family. She was a loving wife and mother. She will be dearly missed.

September 15, 1950 to November 5, 2021

FRANCESVILLE - Joyce J. Reuille, 71, of Francesville (formerly of LaPorte) passed away at home Friday, Nov. 5.

She was born Sept. 15, 1950 in Lynch, KY to the late Arthur Lewis and Ora Bell Rogers Morgan. On Aug. 31, 1984, she married Dennis W. Reuille in LaPorte. He survives.

Mrs. Reuille was a proud homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and canning as well as flower gardening. She especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren. She liked playing Rummy and other card games for fun. She had a heart of gold and did so much for others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, at Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at the funeral home. Pastor John Countryman will officiate. Burial will be at Roseland Cemetery in Francesville.

Frances A. Hoover

February 25, 1936 to November 3, 2021

ROYAL CENTER - Frances A. Hoover, 85, of Star City, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 3, at home.

Born on Feb. 25, 1936 in Chicago, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Hannah Dunker Smidler. She was a Francesville High School graduate. On July 30, 1955, she married Donald “Dink” Hoover. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1992.

Survivors include her children, Douglas (Lenora) Hoover of Star City, David (Mary) Hoover of Star City, Dale (Linda) Hoover of Star City, Denise (Raymond) Johnson of Star City and Diana (Thomas) Tiede of Star City; brother, Herman “Sonny” (Norma) Smidler of Monticello, and sisters, Katherine “Bunny” (Nub) Brogdon of Winamac and Paula (Larry) Beauchamp of Monticello. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by infant son, Daniel Hoover and brother, Freddie Smidler.

Mrs. Hoover was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pulaski and the Christian Mother’s Society. She was a farmer’s wife and mother and had many jobs in her life. She was a jack of all trades and a master of none. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, canning and most of all spending time with her family.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 8, at Rans Funeral Homes & Crematory, Harrison Chapel, Royal Center. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 9, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pulaski. Burial will be at St. Joseph South Catholic Cemetery in Pulaski.

Richard R. Brown

August 11, 1930 to October 28, 2021

WINAMAC - Richard Ray Brown, 91, of Winamac, passed away, Thursday, Oct. 28,  at Hickory Creek Healthcare in Winamac, following a brief illness.

He was born Aug. 11, 1930 in Medaryville, to the late Harry and C. Ferrell Freeman Brown. On Dec. 11, 1955, he married Eleanor L. Strand in Winamac. She passed away July 9, 2002.

Mr. Brown’s family relocated from Medaryville to Ripley, when Richard was six months old. They lived in and operated the Ripley grocery store and gas station. At the age of nine, Richard took his first job weeding mint (11 cents an hour) for Art Gumz. He attended Ripley School (through the eighth grade) as well Ripley Gospel Chapel. He worked in construction and helped build the Ripley Gospel Church building and the Memorial Chapel at Culver Military Academy in Culver. In 1950, he went on the wheat harvest in Kansas; hopping trains to get there (from Logansport to Wickenburg, AZ to Kansas City, KS). He began his 41½ year career with the Erie-Lackawanna-Conrail Railroad in 1951 and retired in 1992. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 2014, he was proud to take part in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and church-member. He was a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Lake Bruce Community Church at Lake Bruce where he served multiple terms as trustee. He enjoyed traveling as well as playing Pinochle and Euchre. He also especially enjoyed tinkering and supervising at the farm. He was a well-known storyteller with a sharp mind until his last day. He was truly one-of-a-kind and will be sincerely missed by many.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Frain Mortuary in Winamac. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, at Pleasant Hill Lake Bruce Community Church at Lake Bruce. Burial will be at Winamac Cemetery (McKinley Addition) in Winamac. The American Legion and VFW will conduct military graveside services.

Judith G. Malchow

May 31, 1936 to October 28, 2021

FRANCESVILLE - Judith Glee Malchow, 85, of Francesville, passed away Thursday, Oct. 28, at her residence.

She was born May 31, 1936 in Gary. Her parents were Robert H. and P. Justin Cary Hawley. On June 22, 1963, she married Paul H. Malchow in South Bend. He died June 21, 2004.

Mrs. Malchow graduated from South Bend Riley High School in 1955. She received her bachelor’s degree in education in 1959 from Indiana University. She earned her master’s degree in the 1970s from Indiana University South Bend. She was an elementary teacher in South Bend for several years. She also taught elementary school at the Beaver Township school. She retired from West Central Schools after a career of 31 years. She loved the Lord and was a member of the Tippecanoe Christian Church in Winamac. She enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a Notre Dame football and IU basketball fan.

Visitation will be from11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, at Tippecanoe Christian Church, 5292 W CR 750 S, Winamac. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the church with Rev. Ed Clark officiating. Burial will be at Tippecanoe Cemetery.
