Police investigate accidental shooting

A rural Winamac man died Thursday in a Fort Wayne hospital as a result of an accidental gunshot wound to the head which happened late Wednesday night at his residence.

John W. Heck, 60, was found breathing, but unresponsive by police on the floor of his home, after a 911 emergency call was placed by the victim's brother-in-law, Robert J. Sommers, at about 10 p.m., April 17.

A report from Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer says Sommers advised police in the call that Heck had just shot himself in the head. Officers Matt Anderson and Tyler Campbell responded to the residence at CR 335 E 100 S, Winamac. The officers found Heck with an apparent gunshot wound to his head.

Heck was taken to Pulaski Memorial Hospital and then transported to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, where he had been listed in critical condition as of Thursday morning (April 18).

The case is being investigated by Pulaski County Sheriff’s detectives. Foul play is not suspected at this time.
