Donnelly: There are still too many Hoosiers out of work

Senate passes bipartisan bill to extend long-term unemployment benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Joe Donnelly released the following statement Monday (April 7) after he voted to extend federal long-term emergency unemployment benefits, and the Senate passed the legislation 59 to 38.

This bipartisan legislation would extend long-term emergency unemployment compensation for five months, including three months retroactivelyThe bill will now be sent to the House.

“There are still too many Hoosiers out of work, and we need to make sure families have food on the table while mom or dad looks for a job,” Donnelly said. “This bill passed with support from Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, and I am hopeful my colleagues in the House will also act in a bipartisan manner and extend these emergency unemployment benefits.”

Approximately 40,000 Hoosiers who saw their long-term unemployment benefits expire could be eligible for benefits if the Senate extension is enacted, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Unemployment Insurance.
