4-H Livestock Auction totals over $141,754

Buyers paid a total of $141,754.65 at the annual 4-H Livestock Auction at the 2014 Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair Thursday evening (July 3) at the Winamac fairgrounds. The amount was down from last year’s total of $148,359.70. (The 2006 record auction totaled $157,816.46.)

Cattle, sheep and hogs at the auction numbered 107, compared to 124 last year. There were five starter calves and 21 goats sold. Other items auctioned included poultry, dairy products and kisses by 4-H Royalty and Miss Pulaski County.

The 82 head of swine at the auction sold for a total of $61,464.15. The 12 head of cattle brought $28,817.70. The seven dairy finished steers and starter calves brought $24,961.55. The 21 goats brought $10,422.25. The seven sheep brought $3,789. All other animals and auction items totaled $12,209.

Shalihn Compton sold her grand champion barrow to a buyers group

Again, this year's auction was aided by some buyer support groups, consisting of local individuals and businesses, who pooled their resources to purchase auction animals to support the 4-H'ers.

Miss Pulaski County 2014 Justine Kruger’s kiss was purchased by her parents Gary and Tish Kruger in memory of Kenneth Kruger, for $1,200. The 2014 4-H Royalty kisses, given by Caylin Duffy and Dustin Dahn sold for $900 and $1,200, respectively. Caylin’s kiss was purchased by Kerry Baker, while Dustin’s smooch was purchased by his mom Rosa and a buyers group.

The grand champion barrow was shown by Shalihn Compton, daughter of Sara and Steven Popejoy of Van Buren Township. The 261-pound crossbred hog sold to the Shalihn Compton buyers group, for $11.50 per pound for a total of $3,001.50. Last year’s grand champion barrow sold for $10 per pound to a buyers group.

The reserve grand champion barrow, shown by Taylor Brandt, was not sold. Last year’s reserve grand champion brought $5.50 per pound.

The grand champion and reserve grand champion gilts were not sold at the auction. The grand champion (a cross) was shown by Jenna Zeider, daughter of Rich and Elaine Zeider of Van Buren Township. The reserve grand champion (a York), was shown by Shalihn Compton.

The grand champion steer, shown by Regan Culp, was not sold at the auction. Last year’s grand champion steer also was not auctioned.

The reserve grand champion steer was shown by Brant Howard, and was sold to Steve Rausch’s buyers group, which included Good Oil, Wilson Feed, Dairy Barn, FRATCO, Webb Printing and JT Shirt Shack. The 1,483-pound crossbred steer brought $4 per pound for a total of $5,932. Brant's parents are Tom and Ann Howard of Monroe Township.

The grand champion dairy finished dairy steer, shown by Selena Leman, was not sold. Selena is the daughter of Scott and Kathy Leman of Jefferson Township.

The reserve grand champion dairy finished steer, shown by Brooke Daugherty, was purchased by the Brooke Daugherty buyers group, for $2.55 per pound for a total of $3,962.70 for the 1,554-pound Holstein steer. Brooke is the daughter of Bunny and Curt Daugherty of Indian Creek Township.

The grand champion starter dairy calf also did not sell. It was shown by Eli Nielsen.

A cheese basket, representing the grand champion dairy heifer, shown by Ethan Leman, brought $500 from Roger Ward and Doug Leman. Ethan is the son of Phillip and Amber Leman of White Post Township.

The grand champion market lamb, owned by Laini Joseph, sold to T&T Farms for $5.50 per pound for the 129-pound crossbred sheep, bringing a total of $7,095. Laini's parents are Anne and Kent Wamsley of Jefferson Township.

The reserve grand champion market lamb was shown by Thad Alexander and was purchased by Braun Corporation for $4 per pound for the 129-pound Suffolk lamb. Thad’s parents are Scott Alexander and Melissa Alexander of Monroe Township.

The grand champion meat wether goat, owned by Brandon Putt, was purchased by Wayne Putt and Dale Gudeman for $15 a pound, a total of $975 for the 65-pound goat. Brandon’s parents are Mike and Donna Putt of Salem Township.

The 68-pound grand champion dairy wether goat was shown by Breanna DeMarco and was purchased for $6 per pound, a total of $408 by the Braun Corporation. Breanna’s parents are Deke and Christine DeMarco of Monroe Township.

Keegan Doughty sold his champion meat class chickens to Pulaski County Sheriff candidate Jeff Richwine for $300. Keegan’s parents are Teri and Rob Schmicker of Beaver Township.

The reserve champion roaster chickens were sold by Audrey Doughty, daughter of Rob and Terri Schmicker of Beaver Township. They brought $400 from Rutherford Byron Walters.

Mary Pierce showed the champion turkey which sold to Dale Gudeman for $600. Mary’s parents are James and Peggy Pierce of Salem Township. The reserve champion turkey, owned by Keira Bucinski, was sold to John Kwiatkowski for $400. Keira’s parents are Joey and Laura Bucinski of Harrison Township.

Katie Culp sold her champion duck for $300 to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Culp. She is the daughter of Gary and Stephanie Culp of White Post Township. Kole Loehmer’s reserve champion duck sold for $200 to O&K Farms. Kole’s parents are Greg Loehmer and Lisa Stiles of Indian Creek Township.

The champion meat pen of rabbits was not sold. It was shown by Mary Pierce. The reserve champion meat pen of rabbits, shown by Sydney DeWitt, was purchased by Jerry and Bonnie Locke for $425. Sydney is the daughter of Kevin DeWitt and Stephanie Feece.
