Young teen girl injured in pedestrian/truck incident

FRANCESVILLE - A 14-year-old rural Franceville girl was airlifted to Indianapolis Thursday afternoon (Nov. 24) with head injuries, following a truck-pedestrian accident along U.S 421 in Francesville.

Police have not released the name of the teenager who reportedly walked onto the highway just before she was struck by a semi-tractor-trailer truck.

The Pulaski County 911 Dispatch Center received a report of the incident at 2:24 p.m., Thursday which happened just south of the Gordon Street intersection, near the Patio Drive-in.

The semi-truck was driven by Jerry W. DeHaven, 57, of Rossville. According to Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer, the truck driver was southbound on U.S. 421 when he observed a pedestrian walking along the road. DeHaven told police that suddenly, the pedestrian turned and walked into the southbound lane.

The police report said the driver sounded his horn and swerved into the northbound lane in an attempt to miss the pedestrian; however, the pedestrian was struck by the center of the tractor knocking her to the ground.

The girl was airlifted by LifeLine to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.
