Star City man arrested on attempted murder charge

STAR CITY - One Star City area man was arrested Sunday on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery, and another was transported to a Fort Wayne hospital with extensive head injuries, following an alleged beating south of the rural town.

Arrested was Kevin E. Holcomb, 45. Injured was Todd E. Schultz, 44, according to a report from Pulaski County Sheriff Mike Gayer.

On Sunday (Dec. 14), Pulaski County Sheriff's Department officers responded to a 911 cellular telephone call received by Cass County Central Dispatch in reference to a possible felonious assault at an unknown location.

Deputies from the Pulaski and Cass County Sheriff’s Departments responded at about 5 a.m. to the area of CR 900 S and CR 440 East after a location of the cellular telephone was obtained.

Deputies located a vehicle and evidence at the scene indicating a subject had been injured in the area. Police determined the abandoned vehicle belonged to Schultz. During the investigation, deputies were led to Schultz's residence where he was found to have extensive injuries to his head and face. Schultz was assisted at the scene by EMS personnel and later transported by Samaritan Medical Transport to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. As of Wednesday, he had reportedly been released from the hospital.

Holcomb was taken into custody on scene and transported to the Pulaski County Jail, according to the police report filed by Detective Sgt. Jason Woodruff.

Police have not released any information regarding a possible weapon or motive.

On Monday (Dec. 15),  an order approving probable cause was filed in Pulaski Circuit Court charging Holcomb with attempted murder, a Level 1 Felony, and aggravated battery, a Level 3 Felony.

Holcomb bonded out of jail Tuesday, and at an initial hearing Wednesday in Pulaski Circuit Court he entered a plea of not guilty. The next court date is set for 8 a.m., Feb. 17.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are continuing this investigation.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Cass County Sheriff’s Department, Winamac Police Department, Pulaski County Prosecutor’s Office, Pulaski County EMS Personnel, and the Star City Fire Department.
