Krysten Hinkle to head Pulaski County's celebration of Indiana Bicentennial

The Pulaski County Community Development Commission (CDC) has announced the establishment of the Pulaski County Bicentennial Committee to lead the county’s efforts in celebration of Indiana’s Bicentennial in 2016, and to serve as a liaison to the Indiana State Bicentennial Commission (IBC).

Krysten Hinkle, CDC project coordinator, will serve as the designated Bicentennial County Coordinator.

Set for 2016, the year-long celebration will honor Indiana’s 200 years of statehood with Legacy Projects and an Olympic-style torch relay across the state, among other activities.

The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay will start in September 2016 in Corydon, Indiana’s first state capital, and culminate with a celebration in October on the grounds of the statehouse in Indianapolis. Accompanying the torch will be a mobile visitor center serving as an interactive museum that highlights important milestones during Indiana’s first 200 years. Torch bearers will be Hoosiers who have been nominated by their peers through the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay website. A map of the torch relay route (subject to modifications) can be found at www.indiana2016.com/torchrelay

The Bicentennial Committee will organize torch-relay activities in Pulaski County, which is tentatively set for the afternoon of Oct. 7, 2016. The route will begin on US 35 at  the Cass/Pulaski County line and end on US 35 at the Pulaski/Starke County line, with planning currently underway to include a canoe trip around the Winamac Town Park.

Additional volunteers will be needed to assist with the preparation and execution of relay-related activities.

Legacy Projects are generated by community members and endorsed by the IBC on a quarterly basis. These projects strive to leave a lasting legacy in honor of Indiana’s Bicentennial. Legacy projects must be open and accessible to the public, fundable without IBC support, and achievable as a meaningful contribution to Indiana’s legacy.

Pulaski County residents or organizations interested in implementing an endorsed Legacy Project may contact Krysten Hinkle. Those interested in volunteering for the Torch Relay activities can sign up at the Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay Website.
