Health Department conducts 'medical emergency' exercise

The Pulaski County Health Department held a table top exercise May 20 to discuss plans and coordination efforts in the event of a public health emergency.

Preparedness coordinator at the Health Department, Sherry Fagner, said the scenario of the exercise was based on an intentional biological release at a mass gathering.

Local partners attending the exercise were; Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Health Department, EMS, Sheriff’s Department, EMA, Mental Health, Pulaski HealthCare Center, Eastern Pulaski Schools, local media partners, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Indiana State Department of Health.

“We did a lot of collaboration on if a true public health emergency were to ever be declared in our county” said Fagner.

The objectives of the exercise focused on information sharing and public information, medical countermeasure dispensing and communications. Information gathered and lessons learned will be used to improve plans and procedure to better serve the public in any public health emergency locally.

Doing exercises and collaborating with partners keep plans up-to-date. The Health Department hosts a monthly preparedness meeting with all of its county partners to keep informed of local issues and planning efforts.
