Indiana Bicentennial Train is moving to a new home for the next several years

INDIANAPOLIS— All aboard the Indiana Bicentennial Train!

The Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana State Fair Commission announced Thursday that the train, will move to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the next several years in celebration of the state’s 200th birthday in 2016.

For five years the train exhibit will reside on 200 feet of tracks and will be located on the northeast side of the fairgrounds in the Family Fun Park. It will have an on-board exhibit and additional activities for fairgoers. The Bicentennial Train will debut at its new location during the 2015 Indiana State Fair.

This year’s fair has been named the Year of the Farmer and runs Aug. 7-23.

The fair is one of Indiana’s top tourist destinations each year. More than two million people are expected to visit. The goal of moving the train to the fairgrounds is to reach more Hoosiers.

“We are thrilled for this chance to share the Indiana Bicentennial Train with such a large audience from around the state, while also offering an extra attraction for our fantastic Indiana State Fair,” said John Herbst, Indiana Historical Society president and CEO in a statement. “It is our hope that sharing stories from Indiana’s last 200 years will not only celebrate the Bicentennial, but will also inform decisions that will determine what kind of place Indiana will be in 25, 50 and even 100 years from now.”

Since 2013, the Bicentennial Train has visited eight communities around the state – Kokomo, New Haven, Valparaiso, and Delphi in 2013, followed by Columbus, Jasper, Terre Haute and Bargersville in 2014.
