Work begins on Pulaski County Jail Garden

Pulaski County inmates and correctional officers began work April 19 at the Pulaski County Jail Garden.

The garden is located at the Pleasant View Rest Home property, which is the previous site of the county home.

This will be the second year for the Pulaski County Jail Garden. Last year’s garden produced approximately 300 pounds of potatoes, 125 pounds of green beans, 22 dozen peppers, onions, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelons. The produce grown in the garden was incorporated into the inmate meals, with the goal of lowering inmate meal costs at the jail.

Also located at the Pulaski County Jail Garden are four pear trees, three apple trees, and three peach trees. These trees were planted last year by Jacob Conner of Winamac as an Eagle Scout project. These trees can sometimes take 2-6 years to bear fruit, but will be a great addition to the garden.

This year’s garden is planned to be larger than in previous years.
