Buyers pay $120,403 at 4-H Livestock Auction

Buyers paid a total of $120.403.30  at the annual 4-H Livestock Auction at the 2016 Pulaski County 4-H & Community Fair Thursday evening (July 7) at the Winamac fairgrounds.

The amount was down from last year’s total of $124.456.60. (The 2006 record auction totaled $157,816.46.)

A total of 166 animals were sold, and included cattle, sheep and hogs, plus starter calves, rabbits and goats. Other items auctioned included kisses by 4-H Royalty and Miss Pulaski County, and a quilt for the Extension Homemakers’ scholarship fund.

The sales by animal species were: beef $15,565.05, sheep $2,014.50, swine $65,603.25, dairy $17,312, poultry $5,339, rabbits $900 and goats $7,969.50.

Again, this year's auction was aided by some buyer support groups, consisting of local individuals and businesses, who pooled their resources to purchase auction animals to support the 4-H'ers.

Miss Pulaski County 2016 Jessica Wagner’s kiss was purchased by her father Darrin Wagner for $1,100. The 2016 4-H Royalty kisses, given by Regan Culp and Peyton Newman sold for $2,700 and $1,150, respectively. Regan's kiss was purchased by Jim Culp, Dan Culp and Joe Crist, while Peyton's kiss was bought by her parents, Art and Melissa Newman.

The quilt, made by Julie Kasten, was sold for $750 to Tom Murray Jr. The proceeds will benefit the Pulaski County Extension Homemakers’ scholarship fund.

The top animals sold at the auction were as follows:

  • The reserve grand champion barrow was shown by Kirsten Calloway, and was purchased for $17 a pound for the 278-pound pig by a buyers group, the Friends of Kirsten Calloway, for a total of $4,726. Kirsten is the daughter of Don and Theresa Calloway of Royal Center.
  • The fifth-placing overall beef steer was also shown by Kirsten Calloway, and sold to Murray Leasing for a total of $2,052 for the 1,140-pound steer.
  • The reserve grand champion dairy steer belonging to Salena Leman was purchased by Good Oil Company for $2,329.50 for the 1,553-pound steer. Salena is the daughter of Scott and Kathy Leman of Francesville.
  • Top money for sheep went to Elizabeth Button who received $679.50 for her 151-pound lamb from M&R Ag/Becks Hybrid. Elizabeth is the daughter of Melvin and Karen Button of Winamac.
  • The grand champion wether goat, shown by Kassi Dahn, sold for $1,224 to the Friends of Kassi Dahn buyers group. Kassi is the daughter of Brian and Rose Dahn of Winamac.
  • Top dollar for poultry went to Katie Culp who received $625 from Jim Dobson Ford. Katie is the daughter of Gary and Stephanie Culp of Francesville.
  • Sydney DeWitt's champion meat pen of rabbits sold to Jerry Locke for Commissioner for $600. Sydney is the son of Kevin DeWitt of Winamac.
