Sheriff warns of scam telephone calls

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a telephone scam which has recently been reported to its department.

This telephone scam involves a female caller stating she is having headset problems after the potential victim answered the call. The female caller then asks if the potential victim can hear her and after responding begins to claim the potential victim has won different types of lavish vacations.

The telephone calls have been reported as coming from familiar area codes making the potential victims more likely to answer the call. The recent report made to this department showed the telephone number as a number returning to a Pulaski County government office.

When receiving a telephone call of this nature the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office recommends citizens hang up immediately. These scammers have reportedly attempted to obtain further pertinent information from potential victims. The scammers have also been known to record the potential victim’s voice to be used to trick automated systems such as authorizing credit card charges and utility company charges.

Sheriff Jeffery Richwine would like to offer advice to citizens to help avoid scams such as this telephone scam. Sheriff Richwine recommends citizens not answer telephone calls from telephone numbers they do not recognize and to not give out personal information over the telephone.

“When receiving a suspicious telephone call which you believe is a potential scam please hang up immediately” said Richwine.
