Pulaski dedicates Old Mill Park Pavilion

The Pulaski Community dedicated its new Old Mill Park Pavilion along the Tippecanoe River Friday evening.

The picnic pavilion was funded with a $5,000 "Love Your Community" grant from the Community Foundation of Pulaski County.

The Pulaski Community dedicated its new Old Mill Park Pavilion Oct. 13. The picnic pavilion was funded with a $5,000 "Love Your Community" grant from the Community Foundation of Pulaski County.

Lifelong residents Paul and Brenda Gilsinger, Community Foundation executive director Wendy Rose, county commissioner Kenny Becker and Father Leroy Kinnaman spoke at the dedication.

The pavilion was built by TM Construction, with concrete work by Travis King of Kingsmen Concrete, landscaping by Proscapes Unlimited, and picnic tables by Scott Roudebush.

It sits near the site of the old, mid-19th century grist mill in Pulaski.

The Old Mill Park Pavilion is the first of three new enterprises coming to the little river village. During his comments at the dedication, Paul Gilsinger shared plans for a new museum/workshop under construction in town. The facility is a dream project of the Gilsingers who have accumulated a collection of Indian Creek Township memorabilia they hope to display in the new building, which will include a workshop in the back portion of the facility.  Construction is expected to be completed early next year. The couple expects the complex to one day be deeded to the township.

Gilsinger also announced that he and his wife have just purchased the 1904 Pulaski Presbyterian Church building. He said community members have expressed a wish for a township community center. The church may be used for that purpose, as the couple begins initial considerations for the future of the historic building.

Gilsinger noted the town is fortunate to be "obtaining projects to encourage community involvement."

Love Your Community Grants

In recognition of the Community Foundation’s 20th year in 2017, special Love Your Community placemaking grants offered financial assistance to local community partners to bring new life to their public spaces.

Placemaking project requests were invited from nonprofit or government organizations representing the individual towns of Winamac, Francesville, Medaryville, Monterey, or Star City and Pulaski communities in Pulaski County.  Love Your Community grants totaling $50,000 were awarded this summer.

The 2017 Love Your Community grant opportunity replaced the Community Foundation's typical annual competitive grant cycle.

The $50,000 in placemaking grants were awarded to the following towns:

  • Winamac $10,000 for Downtown Restrooms
  • Monterey $10,000 for It's a Family Affair
  • Star City $5,000 for Recreational Park Upgrade
  • Pulaski $5,000 for Shelter Project
  • Medaryville $10,000 for Community Garden
