LAFAYETTE – Food Finders Food Bank is launching its annual Drive Away Hunger Fall Food Drive, a community-wide effort from Oct.19 through Dec. 1.

Drive Away Hunger represents a community-wide effort to raise 400,000 meals during a six-week campaign. Food Finders is calling on the community to unite in helping to stock the food bank’s shelves to ensure that our neighbors facing hunger have enough to eat this winter.

“The holiday season is a natural time for people to think about food, hunger and those less fortunate,” said Kier Crites Scherger, chief operating officer, Food Finders. “Through the efforts of our annual Drive Away Hunger Fall Food Drive, we encourage our neighbors to get out and take action against hunger in our community. It’s easy to organize a food drive at your place of employment, school or church to participate in an existing food drive or to engage with one of the many events that our community partners are hosting during this time. Every little bit helps - there is something for everyone!”

In 2016, Drive Away Hunger food drive collected food to provide more than 332,000 meals for people in need. This year, the goal is to collect the equivalent of 400,000 meals to keep the food bank stocked throughout the winter..

Food Finders’ executive director, Katy Bunder added, “This is our seventh year to hold the Drive Away Hunger food drive. It’s very gratifying to see all the different organizations in our community that want to help feed people in need. I hope this will be the biggest drive yet. We really need the food as we prepare for the holiday season.”

Several area businesses are sponsoring the 2017 food drive to allow Food Finders to increase awareness of the food drive and the need for food. Food Finders would like to thank its Checkered Flag sponsor, Cargill, its Key sponsors: Maximumedia, The Assure Group, and Star City Broadcasting, its Engine and Green Light sponsors: CityBus, Evonik, Spero Energy, Southwire, The National Group, Two Men and a Truck, Wabash National, and WLFI for taking action against hunger.

According to recent statistics from Feeding America’s “Map the Meal Gap”, more than 79,000 residents in Food Finders’ service area are food insecure, more than 24,000 of which are children under the age of 18. It is crucial that food pantries and their supporting food banks, like Food Finders, keep their food shelves full for people who face hunger.

Over 40 local businesses, area schools, and churches have already signed on to organize food drives and events during this time. Several community events are planned to help raise awareness throughout the food drive including:

  • Nov. 5 – Dec. 30: Meijer Simply Give - Help Food Finders secure milk and eggs for pantry clients by purchasing a donation card at the register.
