Fourteen children await a CASA volunteer in Pulaski County

Nearly 700,000 children each year are victims of abuse or neglect in the United States.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) trains volunteer advocates who are appointed by judges to speak on behalf of these children, to make sure they do not get lost in the overburdened legal and social service system, or languish in inappropriate group and foster homes. These CASA volunteers make a lifelong difference in the lives of children in their community.

Today there are 81 CASA programs in the State of Indiana that recruit, train, and support volunteer advocates who give a voice to Indiana’s most vulnerable children. There are over 3,700 CASA volunteers in Indiana and in 2016, those volunteers advocated for more than 27,000 children.

Since 2006, Pulaski County CASA has been working to better the lives of children who have been victims of abuse and neglect. However, there are more than 6,000 children in Indiana on a waitlist for a CASA  volunteers.

Currently, in Pulaski County, there are 14 children waiting for a CASA volunteer advocate.

Studies have shown that children with a CASA volunteer are less likely to spend time in long-term foster care, are more likely to receive therapy, health care and education, and are less likely to re-enter the child welfare system.
