Residents reminded of Winamac fireworks ordinance

The Winamac Town Council adopted a fireworks ordinance in 2008, regulating the use of consumer fireworks, and as the Independence Day holiday approaches, residents are reminded of the ordinance's provisions.

The ordinance is intended to protect public health and safety, and to prevent the disturbance of the peace of property owners and residents.

Consumer fireworks may not be used, ignited or discharged within the corporate limits of the Town of Winamac except during the following times:

• Between the hours of 5 p.m. and two hours after sunset on June 29 and 30; and July 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 of each year.
• Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 12 midnight on July 4 of each year.
• Between the hours of 10 a.m. on Dec. 31 and 1 a.m. on Jan. 1 of each year.

The use, ignition or discharge of consumer fireworks other than during the above time periods will constitute an infraction and be subject to a fine of $100.

"Consumer fireworks, " for purposes of the Winamac ordinance means fireworks as defined by Indiana Code Section 22-11-14-1. The Indiana state legislature provides that a municipality may adopt an ordinance concerning the use of consumer fireworks within its corporate limits.
